Grace gets a call from her mother saying that it will only be three of them for Grace's father's birthday. Dreading time alone with her parents, she tries to get Will to come with her at their home in Schenectady but Will instead agrees to go on a blind date set up by Jack.

Karen accompanies Grace to her parents' house and find out that her mother will also be leaving, being the understudy of a local production of Les Misérables. Grace is uncomfortable over the spending time alone with her father, because according to her, all he does is tell the same jokes about her childhood. Karen tells Grace that if she doesn't like the relationship she has with her father then she should work to change it by spending time with him, so Grace accompanies his father to play golf. While riding in the golf cart, Grace's dad takes a turn a little too quick and Grace flies off the cart and rolls down the hill.

When they get back to the clubhouse, Grace expresses to Martin her frustrations about their relationship, saying he is only interested in her is when he can make jokes about her, before storming off upset. Martin returns home and tries to fix things with her daughters by offering to have a sincere conversation. As they sit down, the bottom of Grace's chair gives out and her butt falls on the floor. Martin keeps himself from making a joke and tries to carry on the conversation and Grace recognizes her father's effort to make a connection with her. He tells Grace that he loves her, but that she needs to help him out and to not expect any miracles. She thanks him for trying and wishes him a happy birthday.
